Outside Neuwerk's dike, the salt marshes are part of Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. They are breeding and feeding ground for coastal birds, and they make the island feel much wilder than its tiny settled core suggests.
Stay on marked paths and respect closures. The marsh looks open, but much of its value is in the birds and plants that need quiet space.
