The ruins of a hilltop castle built at the end of the 12th century by Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and one of the most powerful princes of his age. From here he defended his territory against the bishops of Hildesheim and Goslar. The castle was destroyed in 1552 during the Princes' Revolt; today only fragments of walls and foundations remain, but the forest walk up through the beech woods of the Lichtenbergs is reason enough to visit.
