Salzgittersee

A large recreational lake on the western edge of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, formed in the 1970s when former iron-ore mining pits were flooded. Today it's the city's main outdoor escape: a sandy beach, a swimming area, pedalo and boat rentals, and a promenade that loops around much of the shore.

In summer the lake fills up with families, joggers, and cyclists. The water is clean and warm enough to swim comfortably from June through August. There's a campsite nearby and several spots to hire bikes for laps of the lake. It's not a dramatic landscape, but for a post-industrial city it's a genuine asset — a proper place to spend an afternoon outdoors.
