Turm der Arbeit

Salzgitter’s central city monument, a bronze-and-marble tower about labour, industry, and memory.

The Turm der Arbeit stands in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt's pedestrian centre as the city's main public monument. Created by Jürgen Weber and unveiled in 1995, it folds together themes of labour, mining, forced labour, displacement, reconstruction, and the making of a new industrial city.

It is more interesting if you look closely at the reliefs rather than treating it as street furniture. Pair it with Jammertal Memorial Cemetery or Schloss Salder if you want Salzgitter's difficult twentieth-century history to come into focus.
