Schöningen Castle

Fourteenth-century Welf castle near the centre of Schöningen.

Schöningen Castle was built around 1350 by the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, partly as a border stronghold and partly as a residence. Its later history is gentler: it served as a widow's seat and was rebuilt in Renaissance style in the early 17th century.

The castle is more local landmark than blockbuster monument, but it gives the town centre a clear historical anchor after the prehistoric drama of the Paläon.
