The Besseringen B-Werk is a surviving fortified bunker from the Westwall, the defensive line Germany built along its western frontier before World War II. Its concrete rooms and gun positions are a stark counterpoint to the soft Saar valley around it.
Opening arrangements can be limited, so check locally before making it the whole point of a visit. Even from outside, the site gives a useful sense of how heavily this border region was militarised.
