Josephskreuz is a giant steel cross on the Auerberg east of Stolberg, more lookout tower than roadside monument. The present structure dates from the late 19th century and replaced an earlier wooden tower that had been destroyed by lightning.
The walk up through the woods is the best way to make it part of a Stolberg day. From the top you get a broad southern Harz view, with the town tucked back into its valley below.
