Stolberg Castle

Hilltop castle above Stolberg, mixing medieval origins with Renaissance court architecture.

Stolberg Castle stands above the town on a wooded spur, close enough that it feels like part of the old street plan rather than a separate excursion. Its older core goes back to the Middle Ages, while much of the present look comes from Renaissance rebuilding for the counts and princes of Stolberg.

The reward is partly the building and partly the view: roofs, lanes, church tower, and dark Harz forest all sit below the terrace. Even if the interiors are not fully open, the climb gives Stolberg its shape.
