Nordhausen's Roland stands beside the town hall and is the small centrepiece of the old civic core. Roland figures in German towns usually point to medieval rights and freedoms; this one recalls Nordhausen's status as an imperial free city from the thirteenth century until the early nineteenth.
The statue is not a destination on its own, but it gives the centre a useful historical anchor before you walk on to the cathedral area or the distillery.
