German Toy Museum

The German Toy Museum is Sonneberg's reason to detour. Its collections cover dolls, wooden toys, mechanical toys, model worlds and the craft networks that made the town famous. It is nostalgic, but not only nostalgic: you see design, labour, trade and childhood changing together.

Families will find plenty to hold attention, but adults without children should not dismiss it. The best displays show how specialised the toy industry became and how strongly Sonneberg's identity depended on small things made with great precision.

A story
Sonneberg's toy trade was not just local craft: by the 19th and early 20th centuries, merchants here were sending dolls and playthings across Europe and overseas. The museum's collections make the town's old nickname, "Santa's workshop", feel less cute and more like a serious export business.
