Sonneberg Observatory

Sonneberg Observatory stands on the Erbisbuehl above town, away from the toy-museum centre. It was founded in the 20th century and is associated with astronomical observation and sky photography, a surprisingly cerebral counterpoint to Sonneberg's toy-making image.

Check opening arrangements before going, as observatories are rarely casual drop-in sights. Even if you only walk or drive up for the setting, the hill gives Sonneberg a wider frame, with the Thuringian Forest rising behind the town.

A story
Sonneberg Observatory became known for photographic sky surveys, building an archive of plates that recorded variable stars over decades. It is a reminder that this small toy town also kept one eye fixed very seriously on the sky.
