The former county hall is the building that makes Balassagyarmat look like more than a small border town. Built in the 1830s in a restrained neoclassical style, it reflects the period when the town was the administrative centre of Nógrád county.
It is best appreciated as part of a walk through the central streets rather than as a standalone attraction. The broad facade, formal proportions, and square-facing position give the centre a civic weight that many towns of this size lack.
