Karancs Peak

At 729 metres, Karancs is the highest peak in the Karancs–Medves region and the local hiking landmark. The summit lookout tower gives a 360-degree view over the Cserhát and Mátra hills, the Slovak Carpathians to the north, and on rare clear days the snow line of the High Tatras a hundred kilometres further north.

The walk from Karancsalja or Karancsberény takes two to three hours one way through beech forest, well marked with red and blue trail signs. A network of shorter paths links Karancs to Salgó Castle for a serious full-day traverse. The Eresztvény trailhead is the easiest start.
