Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area protects the basalt hills, sandstone formations, forests, and trails north of Salgotarjan. The area includes Salgo Castle, Somoskő, old quarry landscapes, volcanic rock formations, and paths toward Karancs Peak.
It is best treated as a day outdoors rather than a single stop. Marked trails link several of the main viewpoints and geological sights.
