Szent György-hegy

Volcanic hill capped with dramatic basalt organ pipes and vineyards

A short drive south of Tapolca, Szent György-hegy is the most spectacular of the half-dozen volcanic witness mountains that punctuate the basin. Its flat summit is ringed by exposed basalt columns — the so-called orgonák, or organ pipes — left by erosion of the surrounding tuff.

A marked footpath climbs from the village of Hegymagas through vineyards and old stone press-houses to the rocky summit plateau (about an hour up). The views stretch across Lake Balaton to the south and the Bakony hills to the north. Several cellar-doors on the lower slopes pour the local Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű.

A story
The basalt columns on the hill's flanks are the eroded core of a Pliocene-era volcano. The same volcanism produced all the witness mountains of the Tapolca Basin and gave the local wine its distinctive mineral character.
