Disznókő Winery

Disznókő is one of the great first-growth estates of the Tokaj wine region, occupying a dramatic south-facing hillside about 8 km from the town of Tokaj. The estate produces some of the region's finest Aszú wines, including a celebrated 6 puttonyos that regularly appears on international lists of exceptional sweet wines.

The cellars are among the most atmospheric in Hungary — long stone corridors stretching 3 km underground, maintained at a constant temperature of around 12°C, lined with small Gönci barrels. Tours take you through the production process from grape to glass, with the highlight being a tasting of three or four wines in the cellar itself. Book ahead in summer.

A story
Disznókő — "boar's stone" — takes its name from a basalt rock formation on the hillside above the cellar that resembles a resting boar. The estate was nationalised in 1948 and fell into disrepair; it was purchased by the French insurance giant AXA Millésimes in 1992, who spent years restoring the vineyards and the underground cellars to their pre-war standards.
