Göcsej Village Museum

Open-air folk museum of timber houses, farmyards, and a working watermill from the Göcsej region.

The Göcsej Village Museum is Zalaegerszeg's best reason to pause. It gathers wooden houses, barns, fences, farm tools, and a watermill into a small rural settlement, showing the architecture of the Göcsej region without making you drive through half the county to find it.

Come slowly rather than as a checklist stop. The pleasure is in the details: smoke-darkened rooms, small courtyards, patched roofs, and the way the buildings sit beside the old Zala watercourse.

A story
The museum opened in 1968 and is often described as Hungary's first open-air ethnographic museum. Its watermill was moved here from Hencida, giving the village scene one real working machine rather than just a row of saved buildings.
