Borg á Mýrum

A short drive west of Borgarnes, the farm of Borg á Mýrum is the actual setting of Egil's Saga — this is where Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson made his homestead after fleeing Norway, and where his son Egill grew up. A small church and a 17th-century farmhouse still stand on the spot, with the unmistakable rocky outcrop ("borg") rising behind them.

There is not a great deal to see on the ground — a sculpture by Ásmundur Sveinsson titled Sonatorrek commemorates Egill's lament for his drowned sons — but the place is atmospheric, particularly in low evening light. The graveyard around the church holds members of the same family that has farmed here since the saga age.

A story
Skallagrímur Kveldúlfsson, the saga hero, named this place Borg — meaning rock — after the prominent rocky knoll behind the farm. His son Egill is supposed to have hidden his stolen silver hoard somewhere on the estate before he died; treasure hunters have been digging on and off for a thousand years without success.
