Sorcerer's Cottage

The Sorcerer's Cottage in Bjarnarfjörður, about 27 kilometres north of Holmavik along the Strandir coast, is a satellite exhibit of the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft. It presents a reconstructed turf-and-timber farmhouse of the kind that would have been common in 17th-century Iceland, furnished as it would have been in the period when witch trials were at their height. The setting in the remote fjord landscape dramatically reinforces the sense of isolation and superstition that characterised rural life here.

The drive to get there is part of the appeal. The road north from Holmavik follows the coast through increasingly raw and empty country — few settlements, dramatic cliffs, occasional glimpses of the fjord below. You need your own vehicle; there is no regular bus service. Open in summer during the same hours as the main museum.
