Systrafoss

Twin-thread waterfall dropping from the hill directly above Kirkjubaejarklaustur.

Systrafoss falls from the hill just above the village, splitting into pale strands when the water is good. It is not one of Iceland's giant waterfalls, but its position makes it feel like part of Klaustur rather than a separate attraction.

The climb toward the top is worthwhile in clear weather. From above, the village, Ring Road, and surrounding lava country line up in a way that explains why travellers have long used this spot as a pause between bigger places.

A story
The name means "Sisters' Falls", a reference to the nuns of the old convent at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Local place names around the village keep returning to those sisters, which gives the small landscape a surprisingly coherent folklore.
