Varmárvöllur

Town stadium and home of football club Afturelding

Varmárvöllur is the small multi-purpose stadium at the centre of Mosfellsbær and the home ground of Afturelding, the town's football and handball club. The pitch sits beside the river Varmá that gives the venue its name; the main stand seats only a few hundred people, but matches against bigger Reykjavik sides bring a noisy local crowd.

For visitors it is interesting mainly as a slice of Icelandic small-town life. The grounds also host the town's annual midsummer festival and athletics events. If a match is on during your visit, tickets are cheap and the atmosphere is unfussy — beer, hot dogs, and a couple of dozen flag-waving locals.
