The Herring Era Museum is the reason Siglufjörður belongs on a North Iceland itinerary. Spread around the old harbour, it recreates the years when herring made the town rich: salting stations, boats, machinery, barrels, workers' quarters, and the industrial noise behind the romance.
It is Iceland's largest maritime and industrial museum, and it gives the town a story you can feel in the streets afterwards. Give it enough time; rushing through misses the point.
