Carrigrohane Castle

Carrigrohane Castle is a well-preserved tower house about 3km east of Ballincollig, standing on a rocky outcrop above the River Lee. The name comes from the Irish "carraig" (rock), and the castle uses that rock dramatically — it sits on a near-vertical limestone bluff above the river, making it one of the more spectacular settings of any castle in the Cork area.

The castle is on private land and not open for visits, but it is easily visible from the road and from the riverside path that runs east from Ballincollig toward Carrigrohane village. The river walk here is attractive, with the castle reflected in the Lee and the Carrigrohane Straight — a famously level stretch of road used for speed trials in the early 20th century — running alongside.
