Clonfert Cathedral

Medieval cathedral on St Brendan's monastic site, known for its richly carved doorway.

Clonfert Cathedral stands on a monastic site traditionally founded by St Brendan in the sixth century. The present church is mostly medieval, and its carved Romanesque doorway is one of the finest small architectural surprises in this part of Ireland.

The interior is still used occasionally by the Church of Ireland. Visit slowly: the building is modest in size, but dense with stone carving and long memory.
