Meelick sits on the Galway side of the Shannon, south of Banagher. Its small Franciscan church, founded in the early fifteenth century, is often described as the oldest Catholic church in Ireland still in active use.
The river setting adds to the stop. Nearby Victoria Locks lift boats past the shallows, and a Martello tower stands guard on a Shannon island.
