Shannonbridge is a small river crossing north of Banagher, named for its narrow eighteenth-century bridge over the Shannon. The bridge still controls the rhythm of traffic, and the riverside setting gives the village its character.
On the west bank are Napoleonic-era fortifications, built for the unlikely but feared possibility of invasion moving inland by river. It is an easy stop to combine with Clonmacnoise or a Shannon drive.
