River Barrow

The navigable river running through the village, with a towpath walk and kayaking

The Barrow is the second-longest river in Ireland and one of the most navigable: a slow, broad stream lined with reeds and willow, with the disused towpath of the Barrow Navigation running along its bank. At Leighlinbridge the river is wide enough for kayakers and the occasional narrowboat, and the towpath here is a particularly pleasant short walk — flat, scenic, and easy to follow north toward Bagenalstown or south toward Goresbridge.

The river is well stocked with brown trout, pike, and bream, and the village is a recognised coarse-fishing spot. Kayaks can be rented at the bridge in summer, and a Blueway route runs along the river for those wanting a longer paddle.
