Costello Memorial Chapel

Tiny 19th-century memorial chapel often described as one of the world's smallest churches.

Costello Memorial Chapel is the little oddity every Carrick-on-Shannon visit seems to include. Edward Costello built it in the late 19th century for his wife, and both are buried inside.

It is tiny enough that the scale is the attraction: a private act of grief turned into a public landmark on a busy town street. You only need a few minutes, but it gives the town one memorable fixed point away from the river.
