The quays are the best place to understand Carrick-on-Shannon. Boats moor along the river, the bridge carries the town over the water, and the Shannon sets the scale of everything around it.
Walk both banks if you have time. The south bank in Cortober gives good views back to the older town, while the north bank keeps you close to pubs, cafés, and the cruise boats.
