Cuilcagh Mountain Trail

The Cuilcagh Mountain Trail — informally known as the Stairway to Heaven after the long boardwalk that climbs its final ridge — is the most dramatic walk in County Cavan. The route begins at Legnabrocky, crosses blanket bog, and ascends to the flat summit plateau of Cuilcagh at 665 metres, the highest point in Counties Cavan and Fermanagh. The views from the top take in a huge sweep of the midland lakes and the drumlin hills rolling away toward the coast.

The boardwalk section, installed to protect the fragile bog surface, has made the summit accessible to a much wider range of walkers than before. Allow three to four hours return. The mountain is also home to the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark, which straddles the border with Northern Ireland — the caves themselves are accessed from the Fermanagh side but can be visited as a day trip from Cavan.
