The Shannon Pot is a small, circular pool set into the boggy plateau below Tiltinbane mountain in northwest County Cavan, and it is as close as anyone has pinpointed to the true source of the River Shannon. The water rises here from a cave system beneath the Cuilcagh Mountains, cold and dark, before flowing south and then east on a 360-kilometre journey to the Atlantic.
The setting is bleak in the best possible way: a windswept upland with few trees and wide skies. The walk from the car park takes around an hour over open bog and rough track — wear waterproof footwear. The experience of standing at the source of Ireland's greatest river is one of those quietly affecting moments that this part of the country does especially well.
