Delphi Valley

Stark mountain valley north of Killary Fjord, remembered for a fatal famine-era relief march.

The Delphi Valley road climbs north from Killary Fjord through a severe, beautiful stretch of mountain country. Fin Lough and Doo Lough sit below slopes that can look almost black in bad weather, and the drive is one of the strongest short routes from Leenane.

It is also a place of famine memory. In 1849, starving people were forced to walk through the valley seeking poor relief; some died on the road. The memorials here keep the scenery from becoming just a postcard.
