Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey is Connemara's postcard view: a grey neo-Gothic house reflected in Pollacapall Lough, with wooded slopes and bare mountains behind it. It is easy to dismiss as a photo stop until you walk the grounds and realise how much there is here.

The visit takes in restored rooms of the abbey, the lakeside church, woodland paths, and the Victorian walled garden. The garden is the sleeper hit, especially in summer, when the restored glasshouses, vegetable plots, and flower borders make the estate feel less like a backdrop and more like a lived-in place.

A story
Kylemore began as a private home built by Mitchell Henry in the 1860s for his wife Margaret. After she died in Egypt in 1874, he built the small neo-Gothic church on the estate in her memory; the Benedictine nuns who arrived from Ypres in 1920 still run Kylemore today.
