A covered Victorian food market in the centre of the city, in continuous operation since 1788 and still working in the same fountain-and-iron-pillar Victorian building it has occupied since 1862. The stalls sell what you would expect a serious Irish food market to sell: butter from Cork producers, salt-aged beef, fresh fish and shellfish from the southwest coast, hot smoked salmon, soda bread, farmhouse cheeses, tripe and drisheen (a local sausage worth trying once), spices, coffee, vegetables.
Cork residents do their weekly shop here as well as visitors browsing it. The Farmgate Café on the upstairs balcony serves lunch made from the produce of the stalls below — short menu, no reservations, an hour wait at weekends.
