Tory Island Round Tower

Truncated granite round tower from Tory's early monastery, still standing near West Town.

Tory's round tower is squat and battered, only about 13 metres high, but it is the main surviving structure from the island's old monastery. The monastery is associated with St Colmcille and was destroyed in the late 16th century; the tower stayed on, damaged but unmistakable.

It is not a grand tower by Irish standards. Its power is in the setting: a fragment of early Christian Ireland still standing in a tiny Atlantic settlement.
