Tau Cross

Rare T-shaped medieval cross standing by the pier as Tory's best-known monastic relic.

The Tau Cross stands near the pier, a simple T-shaped slab of mica slate that looks almost modern until you realise how old it is. It is generally dated to the medieval monastery and is one of only two Tau crosses in Ireland, the other being at Kilnaboy in County Clare.

Its position feels right: close to the place where people arrive and leave, exposed to weather, and tied to the island's old religious life without needing a museum case.
