The Michael Collins Monument marks the place where Collins was killed on 22 August 1922, near the end of the Irish Civil War. It is a roadside memorial rather than a large museum site, but the history gives it weight.
The stop is short and sombre. It makes most sense for travellers already following Collins history through Cork, or for anyone using Macroom as a base to understand the rough politics of early independent Ireland.
