The Gearagh is Macroom's most unusual sight. It was once one of Europe's last ancient alluvial oak forests, until dam works on the River Lee in the 1950s flooded much of it. What remains is an extensive wetland of channels, reeds, dead tree stumps, and drowned traces of old fields.
It is a quiet, slightly haunted landscape rather than a conventional beauty spot. Go for a slow walk, birdlife, and the odd feeling of standing beside a forest that is still present but mostly under water.
