National Science Museum at Maynooth

A specialist museum dedicated to the history of science in Ireland, housed on the Maynooth University campus. The centrepiece is the work of Nicholas Callan (1799–1864), a Maynooth priest who built the world's most powerful induction coil here in the 1830s and made major contributions to electrical theory — largely forgotten outside Ireland because he published in Latin. The collection includes original instruments, early electrical apparatus, and exhibits on Irish scientists. Small, focused, and genuinely surprising: most visitors don't expect to find the origins of the electric transformer in a County Kildare seminary. Check opening hours before visiting — it typically operates on a restricted schedule.
