St Patrick's College & Ecclesiastical Museum

Ireland's national Catholic seminary, founded in 1795 when the Act of Piety allowed the training of priests on Irish soil for the first time. The college campus is a striking piece of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture — long quadrangles, a towering college chapel, and cloistered walks that give it the feel of an Oxford college transplanted to the Kildare plain. The Ecclesiastical Museum contains vestments, chalices, manuscripts, and a remarkable collection of relics documenting the Irish Catholic church from the Reformation to independence. Entry to the grounds is generally free; the museum has a small admission charge. Ring ahead or check the website, as opening hours are limited.
