Ben Bulben

A flat-topped limestone mountain rising 526 metres in the Dartry range north of Sligo, with sheer cliffs on three sides and a long sloping table top. It is the defining image of County Sligo and runs through W.B. Yeats's poetry, most directly in "Under Ben Bulben."

Walkers can climb the long back slope on a well-worn track from Luke's Bridge; the route is straightforward in good weather but exposed in cloud. Boots and waterproofs are essential year round.

A story
The flat-topped limestone block was carved out of the Dartry Mountains by glaciers around twenty thousand years ago. Its profile, almost identical from every angle on the Sligo plain, is the dominant landscape feature of north Connacht and the most-painted hill in Ireland.
