A long, narrow lake five kilometres southeast of Sligo town, ringed by oak woods and small drumlin islands. The most famous of them — Innisfree — is the subject of one of Yeats's best-known poems.
A circular drive of about an hour takes in the south shore, the wooded Slish Wood (Yeats's "Sleuth Wood"), Parke's Castle on the north shore, and Dooney Rock. A wooden Yeats trail walk at Dooney is well marked and very short.
