Blackwater Estuary Walk

The estuary at the mouth of the River Blackwater is one of the scenic highlights of this part of Ireland. The river marks the ancient boundary between Cork and Waterford, and the wide tidal expanse flanked by wooded hills gives Youghal its distinctive setting. Walking the waterfront from the old quays northward, or crossing the bridge to look back at the town, reveals the full sweep of the medieval settlement against its natural backdrop.

Birdwatchers come here for the waders and wildfowl that congregate on the mudflats in winter — the estuary is an important site for species including black-tailed godwit, wigeon, and teal. At high tide the water reflects the old quayside warehouses and the church tower above. A short, flat and unremarkable walk that nevertheless gives Youghal much of its character.
