The National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto holds the finds from over a century of excavation at Metapontum and the surrounding chora. Red-figure pottery, votive bronzes, coins, and grave goods are laid out clearly by period; the labels are in Italian and English.
Go before or after the park — most exhibits are explicitly tied to a structure you can then walk over to and see in its original setting. Closed on Mondays.
A story
The museum sits a few steps from the entrance to the archaeological park and holds everything moved off the site for safekeeping. The highlights are the painted Apulian red-figure vases, the gold jewellery from the sanctuaries, and a remarkable collection of votive figurines that local farmers handed in after centuries of turning them up with their ploughs. The display is small enough to see in an hour and good enough to be worth the detour from anywhere on the Ionian coast.
