Scalea's old town occupies the rocky hill rising steeply above the modern marina. There are no major set-piece monuments here beyond the tower — the appeal is in the fabric itself: whitewashed houses stacked on top of each other, external staircases connecting different levels, arched passages cutting through thick walls, and small churches tucked into corners. Several sections of the original medieval defensive walls survive.
The Borgo is best explored without a map. Streets that look like dead ends turn into stairways; alleyways open unexpectedly onto terraces with sea views. The residents are mostly elderly, and the atmosphere is genuinely quiet compared to the busy beach below. Late afternoon light on the old stone is excellent for photography.
