Gorge del Lao

The Lao river cuts through the mountains south of Scalea, forming a narrow gorge with dramatic limestone walls before reaching the Tyrrhenian coast. The gorge is a popular destination for canyoning and kayaking — local outfitters in Scalea offer guided descents through the canyon with rappels down waterfall sections. It is also possible to hike the upper river valley, which is part of the Pollino National Park.

The river mouth itself, about 6 km south of Scalea, has a small beach at the point where the Lao meets the sea. This is wilder and less developed than the main Scalea beach. The water is cold even in summer — the Lao runs fast from the mountains — which makes it attractive to escape the heat of July and August.

A story
The Lao river marks the ancient boundary between Calabria and Lucania. The Greeks founded the colony of Laos near its mouth around the 6th century BC, making this one of the earliest settled coastlines in southern Italy.
