Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is the finest hiking trail on the Amalfi Coast, running for about 7.8 km along a high limestone ridge between Agerola and Nocelle (above Positano) at altitudes of 400–600 metres. The views are extraordinary — straight down to the sea on one side and back into the mountains on the other — and the path traverses a landscape of terraced vegetable gardens, cistus scrub, and limestone outcrops that bears no resemblance to the resort coast below.

The trail is one-way by convention (west to east, from Bomerano in Agerola to Nocelle), taking 3–4 hours. From Nocelle, a steep staircase descends to Positano in about 45 minutes. You can reach Bomerano by SITA bus from Amalfi or Positano; it is an hour's drive up the mountain. The path is well-marked and not technical, but requires appropriate footwear and water — there are no facilities on the route itself.

A story
The Path of the Gods runs along a limestone ridge that Greek colonists once believed was the route taken by the gods Athena and Hermes when they came to guide Odysseus homeward. Whether or not the legend is ancient, the path has been used since at least the Bronze Age as a route connecting the villages of the inner coast. Its current designation as a popular hiking trail dates only from the 1990s.
