Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

The yellow-and-green majolica-tiled dome of Santa Maria Assunta is the defining image of Positano's skyline, visible from boats far offshore. The church itself is modest in scale but rich in atmosphere — dark interior, candles, and a Byzantine icon of the Madonna said to date from the 13th century.

The interior contains a carved wooden altar and a notable nativity scene. The church is free to enter and usually quiet once you get past the mid-morning rush. The steps leading up to the entrance are a popular spot for photography in the late afternoon light.

A story
The church's Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna is said to have been stolen by pirates in the 13th century. According to legend, the ship carrying it couldn't move until the pirates heard a divine voice saying "Posa, posa" — put it down — which gave the town its name. Whether true or not, the story has stuck for seven centuries.
