Piazza Marconi is the main square and the natural first stop in Frascati. The open end of the piazza drops away to reveal a broad panorama across the volcanic plain — Rome's sprawl visible on the horizon twenty kilometres to the north-west. On a clear winter or spring day, with the air washed by recent rain, you can pick out individual landmarks. It costs nothing and takes two minutes, but it frames the whole geography of the Castelli Romani: these hills as Rome's elevated back garden.
