Ronciglione is a medieval hill town directly south of Lake Vico, perched on a tufa ridge above the Biedano valley. The historic centre is well preserved, with a Roman-era aqueduct arch still standing at the edge of the cliff, a 16th-century castle ruin, and a warren of medieval lanes leading to the Collegiata church at the top of the town.
The town is known for its February carnival — one of the oldest in Lazio, running since the 17th century — featuring horse races on the main street and elaborate costumes. Outside of carnival, Ronciglione is quiet and largely off the tourist circuit. The views from the old town walls down into the valley and toward the lake are excellent, and the walk up through the lower borgo (the newer quarter on the slope below) passes traditional stone houses and small osterie.
